Re-Architecting a Foundational Syndicated Research Program

Health Union’s In America survey has been featured in publications such as Time Magazine and PR Newswire

The Challenge

After more than seven years leading Health Union’s In America syndicated surveys, each designed to capture the lived experience of people with chronic health conditions, I recognized growing pain points across the organization that signaled it was time for a major evolution.

  • Recruitment had become costly and inconsistent
  • Participant fatigue was beginning to affect data quality
  • Internal teams needed quicker, easier access to insights for content, business development, and marketing
  • Research Operations team was in need of new challenges

I saw a clear opportunity to rearchitect the entire program and transform it into a more efficient, scalable, cost-effective, and participant-centered model.

I led the overhaul of the In America research engine with three core goals:

  • Streamline operations to reduce cost and increase efficiency
  • Maintain high data integrity while improving the participant experience
  • Maximize business value by ensuring the data remained actionable and relevant for:
    • Pharmaceutical clients
    • Internal community and content teams
    • Business development and sales
    • Marketing and PR initiatives

Approach

Worked with community managers, marketing, BD/sales, and data teams to ensure the output served each group’s needs without adding friction or confusion.

  • Survey Streamlining: Simplified structure while preserving longitudinal comparability
  • Participant Experience: Reduced response burden by removing or optimizing redundant questions
  • Recruitment Efficiency: Introduced new engagement methods and timing to reduce costs and increase representativeness
  • Data Processing: Aligned internal delivery formats with team needs to accelerate usage

Output

  • An all inclusive survey framework that supported customization by condition while maintaining standardization for longitudinal insights across multiple conditions
  • A streamlined recruitment and fielding strategy, cutting costs while maintaining sample quality
  • New templates for insight delivery tailored to stakeholder needs
  • Created process documentation to align and enable internal teams involved in survey fielding and operational support

Impact

  • Resource savings in both recruitment and research ops without sacrificing data quality
  • Cost savings of multiple recruitment efforts and team efforts to field each condition’s survey individually
  • Faster insight turnaround for enabling quicker response to BD and client needs, along with more timely content development
  • Improved participant experience, leading to better data completeness and higher re-engagement rates over time
  • Future-ready framework built to scale across more health communities with minimal lift
